Most of us will choose a New Year’s resolution of some description for 2019. For many, it’s related to health and fitness or saving more money in the year ahead. However, while these are great ideas why not also include the health of the world around us in your goals for 2019? Below are 4 ways you can focus on being kinder to the environment in 2019:

Use a Re-Usable Coffee Cup and Water Bottle

It’s estimated as many as 50 billion disposable coffee cups end up in landfill every year. While it’s hard to picture just how much waste that it is, it’s a lot and worse still it’s avoidable! Unfortunately, most paper coffee cups cannot actually be recycled due to their composition and while plastic water bottles can be recycled, it still requires a lot of energy and subsequent machinery emissions to recycle them. Buying a reusable coffee cup and water bottle is guilt-free gift for yourself and/or a loved one. With so many styles and sizes available, pick one that’s just right for you!

Say No to the Pesky Plastic Bag in Stores

If only we had a dollar for every time we’ve been asked “Would you like a bag for that?” right?! Plastic bags are a massive threat to the environment and again are so avoidable. If you only have a few items which can be easily carried in your arms, handbag or backpack, do the right thing and refuse the cashiers kind offer. Otherwise keep a cloth tote bag near the front door of your home or in your car which can be grabbed any time you need to head to the shops.

Make Litter Your Concern

It goes without saying that littering is very wrong and can have an extremely detrimental impact on the planet. However so may of us have become immune to the sight of rubbish on pavements, grassy areas and beaches etc. Why not look into whether or not there are organised litter-collection groups in your community? They are a great way to meet other kind souls in the area and do something you feel good about. Alternatively, just pick up loose litter you see here and there when out and about. The smallest gestures can have the biggest impact on our environment as a whole.

Be Mindful of Water Wastage

When you brush your teeth, do you leave the tap running instead of turning it off? Do you flush your toilet when it’s really not necessary? Do you use your dishwasher or washing machine when its only half-full? Could you spend a couple of minutes less in the shower and still be squeaky clean? Addressing these issues is a great way to save water, and in turn have a positive impact on the environment.
