How does The Swag work?

The Swag is made out of three different/unique layers of 100% natural, unbleached, unseeded cotton materials (Australian Patent No. 2015221423, South African Patent 2016/06336, International patents pending).

Each of the three layers play a significant role in keeping your fresh produce fresher for much longer!

The outer layer of The Swag protects your fruit & veggies by protecting the water within the middle layer from drying out too quickly. However, it’s the other two layers that really make all the difference;

The thick, absorbent middle layer holds the bulk of the moisture, almost like the inner layer of a babies nappy, it draws the moisture away from the babies bottom, or in this case, away from the fresh produce within your Swag. However, The Swag still allows the fresh produce to draw on that water and hydrate as needed. If too much moisture is up against your fruit & veggies they’ll rot faster than necessary. That’s why our patented middle layer makes all the difference.

The very inner layer of The Swag, provides a dryer protection barrier however, being permeable, also allows your fruit & veggies to draw on air and water in order to stay Fresher for Longer.

Why does the Swag use unbleached, unseeded cotton?

The Swag is made of three unique layers of 100% natural unseeded, unbleached cotton materials (Australian Patent No. 2015221423, South African Patent 2016/06336, International patents pending).

The Swag is housing your food, so it’s important that you can trust that it’s non-toxic and non-allergenic. The Swag is both non-toxic and non-allergenic (Australian Standard Lab tested).

Originally we thought bamboo or hemp may be our answer. During our mission to find the best non toxic fabric, we discovered that the process of turning a stick (or wood) into a fabric requires woodchipping and then, unfortunately a toxic mix of chemicals that negate any environmental or sustainable claims. Leading wholesalers of ‘eco fabrics ‘ went on to tell us that if they were to house their families food in a fabric, they’d choose unbleached, unseeded cotton every time. After spending three years investigating the best non-toxic, enviro friendly fabric on the market, our research always led us back to unbleached, unseeded (greige) cotton.

Therefore, choosing unbleached, unseeded cotton was the safest and most natural path and in the scheme of things, a far better option than using toxic plastic bags and containers. Why? Plastics are made via a process called polymerization. There are always chemicals that aren’t 100% set into the polymeric structure and can easily ‘bleed’ from the original plastic source.

90% of the chemicals of greatest concern to our health are used to make plastic.

How do I use my Swag?

Everyone has a different way of using their Swags and you’ll find your ‘groove’ in no time at all. they’re really incredibly easy to use.

Firstly, you MUST machine wash your Swags BEFORE USE as the inner layer plumps up and works much better after machine washing.

If possible, when you get your beautiful bounty of fresh produce home from the shops, we highly recommend filling your kitchen sink with cold water and a BIG splash of vinegar (apple cider or white wine) and let them bathe in it (potentially for hours) give them a good rub and take off those horrible stickers that are also having an hideous and unnecessary impact on the environment. For best disposal of these stickers, stick them onto an object or material that’s already in your general waste bin. By doing this, you’re stoping insects/bacteria from becoming stuck to the stickers whilst in landfill. Instead these insects/bacteria can go on loving and breaking down our humungous waste.

If possible chop off the ends or stalks of your produce so they can breath and hydrate better (just like cutting the ends off flowers for a vase)

FYI – ‘furry’ fruits such as peaches and apricots don’t like a long bath – they like a quick plunge and dry!

If you are not seeing two weeks of life (on average) out of your fresh produce then your Swags are either too dry or too damp. Simply play with the hydration levels. If all else fails, please contact us at [email protected] and we’ll work with you until you crack the sweet spot of at least two weeks of freshness!

Personally, I tend to put all of my freshly purchased fresh produce into my large Swags and I move the older produce into a small Swag (red trim) therefore I know the red trimmed small Swag is the one I need to use the produce out of first (the colour coding trims are key here).

Click here to view a short instructional video.

For best results dampen your Swag with filtered water from a jug or filtration system.

For the VERY passionate people…. I only put UNRIPENED fruit in The Swag. And as needed, I move the UNRIPENED fruit from The Swag into the fruit bowl for a day or two and these fruits are perfectly ripened and ready to eat. For more detailed information on this go to question “What doesn’t work well in the Swag?”

Some people like a separate Swag for fruit, veggies or leafy greens. Others throw everything into one Swag. Personally, I like to divide my produce up as follows;

Leafy greens and salad stuff (lettuce, herbs, capsicum, tomatoes, avocado and cucumber etc) in one Large colour coded Swag, another colour coded Swag for all veggies and another for fruits. Then I have a small Swag with a combination of all of the older fresh produce that I want to use first.

The colour coding trim makes it easy to identify what’s in each Swag.

What I LOVE about this system, is that when I’m cooking a stir fry – I pull out The Swag with the colour trim that has the veggies in it and everything I need to prepare my meal is all in one Swag. No multiple trips to the fridge and no need to rummage around to find things! If I’m making a salad I pull out the Swag containing the salad stuff and If I’m doing the kids lunches I pull out both Swags… the one with the salad stuff plus the one with the fruit. I pop the relevant Swag on the bench, use what I want/need and put the half cut up things straight back into The Swag – no need to wrap them in plastic… they’ll stay fresher for much longer when nude (unless it’s a very ripe tomato or avocado – you may want to wrap these)

Remember, The Swag doesn’t ‘need’ to be in the crisper of your fridge. The Swag not only saves money – it saves time! Less rummaging through your fridge and less trips to the shops!

Most fruits such as Non-cherry stone fruits, avocados, tomatoes, mangoes, melons, apples, and pears will continue to ripen if left sitting out on a counter top in a fruit bowl.

Once they are really ripe – try to avoid putting them into The Swag – Just eat them! Why? When fruits approach maturity, they release ethylene. Ethylene promotes the ripening of fruit. However, Ethylene can also cause premature ripening in other fruits and veggies, plus in some fruit and veggies ethylene can actually cause damage.

It’s best to put these fruits into The Swag WELL BEFORE they’re ripe. If you put these fruits into The Swag before they’re ripe (while still firm and giving off no sweet/pungent smell) then The Swag will significantly prolong the period of time before they start becoming ripe and producing ethylene. Then as, and when needed, fill your fruit bowl with the unripened fruit and within a day or so, your fruit will be ripe and ready to eat. If you can see that the fruit has ripened within the Swag – then remove it and either eat it ASAP, put it on a shelf in your fridge (away from other fruits and veggies) or put it in your fruit bowl. Ripe Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, bananas, pears and many other fruits will freeze well and you can use them later in delicious smoothies.

So to summarize; put your UNRIPENED fruit in The Swag and as needed, move the fruit from The Swag to your fruit bowl for a day or two and those fruits will then be perfect to eat.

For best results;

– Fresh corn, take it out of the husk completely whilst in The Swag – corn will stay fresher longer this way.

– If you chop the dry ends off things before you put them into The Swag then they will be able to breathe and hydrate more efficiently.

– Please leave Bananas in the fruit bowl. When freezing bananas take out of the peel first. Cut watermelon/pineapple/rock melon etc is probably best cut up and put into a container however if it’s a whole watermelon, pineapple, rock melon that is not too ripe then they’ll most likely love being in The Swag and will stay fresher for longer that way.

Just remember, you’ll find your groove in no time. BUT, if you want to speed your GROOVE up a little – check out our FAQ’s and all answers should be there.

Alternatively – please email us at [email protected] – we’d love to help you out.

Do I have to cling wrap stuff that I have cut up?

No – absolutely not – there’s no need to wrap them… they stay fresher for much longer that way! Unless it’s an onion and you don’t want your Swag to get a bit smelly however I know heaps of people who still put their cut up onion in The Swag with everything else. Also, any really ripe fruits as discussed below in “What doesn’t work well in The Swag”.

How much and how often should I dampen my Swag?

When dampening a clean dry Swag, dampen your Swag before you put your fresh produce into it. Make sure you dampen your Swag from the outside layer only and really wring out excess water. The inside of the Swag should be dry in parts and not noticeably wet. Too much dampness is not good for your fruit and veggies so, if you’re not seeing the results you’re expecting, then you’re probably applying too much water to your Swag.

Whenever you start to feel the outer layer dry out then it’s time to reapply water. You don’t have to take all the contents out – just sprinkle it with water from the outside. You don’t even have to take The Swag out of your crisper just sprinkle it with water over the top of The Swag whilst it’s sitting in the crisper. As you’re not wetting the whole Swag, you can afford to sprinkle a bit more water on The Swag so that the top flap and surrounding edges can be a little more moist than usual.

If you’re not seeing two weeks on average then your Swags are either to dry or too damp, so have a play with the hydration levels.

When should I not use my Swag anymore?

We recommend replacing your Swags perhaps once every two years or as needed. However, if you’ve gone on a holiday and left rotting produce in your Swag, then I would turn it inside-out and wash it. Then whilst still wet, pour a cup of white wine vinegar over the stains in your Swag and put it through an extra rinse cycle. The vinegar is a natural anti bacterial agent and will also remove the soap detergent/chemicals from your Swags. Whilst still inside-out dry in full sun. The sun is a natural bleacher and sanitizer.

However, if you’ve left your Swag to the point of mould we highly recommend removing them from your fridge immediately and composting them, as mould spores are often difficult to kill and can be toxic. If it the mould is dealt with quickly (using clove oil concentrate) then there is often no contamination and The Swag can go on being used. Contact us at [email protected] for advice

Let’s face it. The Swag is saving Aussie households thousands of dollars (in food waste) per year PLUS we’re removing harsh, toxic chemicals from their lifestyle. The Swag is an investment and totally worth the effort of caring for correctly.

Is the Swag a Fair Trade product?

How often should I wash my Swag?

I recommend an express wash when you first receive your Swags.

Wash as needed or a least once every two weeks. When washing, turn The Swag inside-out and wash in cold/warm wash up to 30 degrees. For the very best results, whilst still wet pour some white vinegar (no frills) over your Swags and run on a rinse cycle. This removers soap residue and is a natural sanitiser. Whilst inside-out dry in full beaming sun. The sun is a natural bleacher and sanitiser. If you use an incredibly hot wash then shrinkage may occur.

This rarely happens however, if you’ve accidentally left your fresh produce in The Swag unattended for a really long time, to the point of mold, I highly recommend throwing them away as mold spores are difficult to kill and can be toxic.

How do I care for my Swag?

Can I put different fruits, veggies and leafy greens in one Swag?

Yes! Go for it.

Each individual fruit, veggie or leafy green will breathe and take in water at its own pace – that’s the beauty of The Swag and the layers offer a unique feature that keeps your fresh produce fresher for longer! There are people who say you shouldn’t put everything together in a container or bag however the vast majority of our customers are doing this and still report significant results. If you want to build upon these results, then go for it –  you can separate your fresh produce and the colour coding will help with this. However, most of my customers have found they have consumed their fresh produce well before they have even started to see any sign of their fresh produce perishing.

Just be mindful to put the harder produce at the bottom – I always start with carrots and then cucumbers, capsicum, broccoli, apples, pears, oranges, and then start stacking some zucchini’s, tomatoes, squash, avocado, then lettuce and herbs on top – it works a treat.

Also, as a rule, Only put UNRIPENED fruit in the Swag and as needed, move the UNRIPENED fruit from the Swag and into your fruit bowl for a day or two and those fruits will then be perfectly ripened and ready to eat. For more detailed information on this go to  question “What doesn’t work well in the Swag?”

What fruits and veggies should not be put together for best results?

As a rule, Only put UNRIPENED fruit in the Swag and as needed, move the UNRIPENED fruit from the Swag and into your fruit bowl for a day or two and those fruits will then be perfectly ripened and ready to eat. Most fruits such as Non-cherry stone fruits, avocados, tomatoes, mangoes, melons, apples, and pears will continue to ripen if left sitting out on a counter top in a fruit bowel. Once they’re ripe – try not to put them into The Swag – Just eat them!

This Ethylene promotes the ripening of fruit however Ethylene, can also cause premature ripening in other fruits and veggies, plus in some fruit & veggies, Ethylene can actually cause damage. For more detailed information on this go to  question “What doesn’t work well in theSwag?”

However, don’t get too hung up on this… if there are ripe fruits in your Swag, they will still stay fresher for much longer even when ripe… so if you can’t eat them in time, then Swag them and you’ll still get several extra days to use them.

Below are a list of Ethylene producing fruits in alphabetical order:

  • Apple
  • Apricot
  • Asian Pear
  • Atemoya
  • Avocado
  • Banana
  • Cantaloupe (Rock melon)
  • Cherimoya
  • Crenshaw melon
  • Custard Apple
  • Durian
  • Feijoa
  • Fig

What doesn’t work well in the Swag?

Strawberries, raspberries and blueberries are probably best left in their pun-nets for protection from squishing and instead nestle the punnets in around the dampened Swags in your crisper of your fridge. The environment The Swags will create within your crisper will help them stay fresher for longer. However if you can ensure no squishing will occur then by all means use The Swag however only apply a smidgen of water to The Swag when they contain strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. Very soft avocado (once cut can get messy).

Banana’s – just leave them out at room temperature in a fruit bowl. And, if they start to go brown take them out of their skin and freeze them – they’re so good in smoothies! So are they berries and they’re very easily frozen too.

Can I put mushrooms in my Swag?

The Swag works incredibly well for mushrooms however DO NOT WET The Swag. Just put your mushrooms into a dry Swag and into the crisper of the fridge. If you’ve bought mushies in a container sealed with cling wrapp they can often feel slimy. That’s because mushies don’t like not being able to breathe and they start sweating. If you mushies are slimy I recommend washing them thoroughly in a little bit of cold water and white vinegar. Then let them dry naturally or pat dry with a tea towel. Once dry and if you’ve managed to remove the slime, then pop them into a dry Swag and into your crisper. Wherever possible buy your mushies in brown paper bags and avoid plastic – mushies hate plastic… they’ll stay much fresher for longer in a brown paper bag or The Swag.

Can I put root vegetables in my Swag?

The Swag works incredibly well for root vegetables such as; potatoes, onions and ginger however DO NOT WET The Swag and Do NOT put it in your fridge – put your root vegetables in a DRY Swag in your pantry… they’ll stay much fresher for longer.

We’ve seen a massive difference to our fruit and veggies freshness. they’re fresh, crisp and amazing for weeks! highly recommend

At first I thought they were a bit pricey but having seen Sarah Wilson use them in her latest book (and knowing she doesn't promote or endorse frivolous or wasteful products) I took the leap & bought a set. I haven't looked back! I LOVE The Swag!! They really should be an essential item for every kitchen - they're an investment that easily pay for themselves inside 3 months. No more rotten veg in the bin - everything stays fresh & crisp for weeks if you follow the instructions. (I keep a spray bottle next to the fridge & give my Swags a generous mist every morning). I'll be investing in a second set soon so I can rotate them properly.

Never had fresher veges! I haven't had to throw anything out since I got them for Christmas. Such a nice change to be able to use all of the veges I buy!

These swags are amazing, for years I have not been able to find something better than the Tupperware fridge smart containers, but I am hooked on these swags, they keep the vegies much fresher. Funny, because when people talked about their vegies being happier, I thought it was a bit funny, but it is true! Can't wait to get hold of some of the tea bags. I am even happier now I found out they are made ethically and source their materials using fair trade methods. Thanks for an amazing product 😀

After a glitch ordering online I was delighted to be contacted personally by the business owner & had my very first order taken. Received the starter pack super fast & it was a nice surprise to get a free shopping bag as well as a good will gesture for my trouble. Been using bags a week now & am literally blown away by how well they are working. It’s also really FUN. I’m having a blast soaking my veg in apple cider vinegar & water & carefully placing them in the bags! Lettuce tastes like it was just picked from my garden a week after it actually was, & haven’t had to chuck anything out! So happy

    Super bags! And super service!
I was unfortunately not able to collect my bags from the post office before they were returned - but the Swag team was so understanding and helpful, so there were no problems! They kept an eye out for my bags and returned them as soon as they turned up - with no other extra charge other then the postage. Now I have used the bags for over a month and I am amazed by how long my vegetables stay fresh! A good investment I’m glad I did, and would recommend it for everyone!

I was a sceptic but I had to try I’ve been looking for a way to keep veggies fresh (especially iceberg lettuce) and thought it simply wasn’t possible without plastic, but I was wrong!! Very happy with my purchase

I love the swags! I have only had mine for a short period now but love the concept and you can tell its high quality and fantastic price as you save so much on produce!
My veg lasts from 2-4 weeks now when it was barely a week before the swag! Also love the colour coordination and keeps the fridge nice and organised. Now I just have to buy a second set

I love the idea of this product but after watching #sharktank I can’t justify $72 for the starter kit when you’ve told us the cost to you is $17. I’m all for profit and margins but come on.

I love My Swag. I was lucky enough to stumble across the bags at the Naturally Good Expo and I’m so happy about it!! They’re amazing! My veggies I bought two weeks ago are still crisp and fresh in the bag. Even my cherry tomatoes are still firm with no sign of wrinkling. I bought the starter kit I think and there’s enough bags in it to have one set being washed and one in the fridge! Amazing!! I’m very impressed. It will save me a lot of money in wasted produce!

I live in a rural location and only do occasional trips to town to stop up on groceries. Being a lover of vegetables I was constantly re-stocking to replace bendy carrots, limp lettuce and the rest of the sad, soggy and unappetising array clogging up my vegetable crisper. The Swag bags have completely changed my shopping habits, saved me heaps of money, educated me in better food storage methods and best of all, reduced wanton wastage. I have dim distant memories of my great grandmother using similar vegetable storage methods in the days of kerosene fridges and ice boxes, before modern refrigeration took hold. You have developed a fantastic product Peita and I salute you for the time and effort you have put in to its development. Wishing you every success in the future. I shall continue to recommend Swag bags far and wide.

I can't tell you how much I love this product. In Singapore, everything fresh spoils quickly because of the humidity, yes even in the fridge. I've had my Swags for just over 3 weeks now and parsley has remained very much alive and quite spritely after more than 10 days in the fridge, broccoli was still green and crisp after two weeks. My housekeeper loves them too. It makes it so much easier for her to work out what vegs we need to top up and so easy to find vegs and fruit in the fridge. I've just bought some for my Mum who I hope loves them as much as I do.

Love, love, love my Swags. My fruit and vegetables are lasting so much longer, less wastage and no more plastic bags.
I have used a similar product (containers) in the past but the Swags are far superior. It takes up less room and you don't have to separate the products.
Do yourself a favour and grab a Swag.

I have been using my swag for over a month now and veggies are lasting double the time! I love it. Have always hated wasting food and creating more waste, I think I have found the answer.

This is a fantastic product. I have had mine for 4 weeks and I'm already saving money by not throwing out fruit and veg within days of buying! 5 stars isn't enough for this one! Absolutely love mine!!

The best way to keep fruit & veg fresher for longer!
It's amazing how easy it is.
I save money and no more soggy mouldy veges in the bottom of the fridge.
    This is genius!

I have been using this product for a month now and I am most impressed. My fruit and vegetables are keeping so much fresher for so much longer. eg. asparagus I experimented and put one lot in the swag and the other just in the crisper. I left both for 10 days and the one that was NOT in the swag was INEDIBLE and the one in The Swag was still really fresh. THAT REALLY IMPRESSED ME!!!

I'm a new fan! LOVE how fresh and crisp my veggies remain, LoVE not using and throwing away plastic bags, and so much better than using plastic containers. Awesome gift too, for friends who've been looking for a new way to store their veggies. Even my husband is impressed 🙂 ha
